Assignment 2: Website Sketches Exercise
Community website design for Shreveport, LA
The primary audience for this website is younger than 50 and has at least a high school diploma. The average citizen of Shreveport, according to the US Census Bureau, is in their 30s or 40s and has a high school diploma. Only 18% of the population is 65 and above, meaning most of the audience is younger and looking for newer, better designs. When designing this homepage, I decided to leave wider column margins so the elements could breathe, rather than overwhelming the viewer with information. More negative space means greater readability, an advantage when so much of Shreveport’s population is working-age and has less free time to read small copy. The same benefit is seen in the decision to use images as buttons in the second design, an interactive element that incorporates modern design with ease of access. Finally, I chose to have the city’s logo and title stand out in both designs to emphasize community pride and involvement.
Some of the most important information to be included on these pages is events and news. On the first design, the copy underneath the logo provides a brief overview of the city for visitors. The photo reel will showcase a range of images of community events and members, both modern and historical. This element will encourage community pride and engage younger generations in the city's history. Finally, the buttons on the left allow for quick access to an events calendar, a local news bulletin, and a local government information hub. The small amount of copy makes the page easier to view overall and allows quick and easy access to what a viewer might need. The design guides the viewer through the page by overlapping the logo and the photo reel. Making the break between elements more dynamic gives the eyes a bridge to follow to the next element.
